Listen- Blues & Beyond #12:Coltrane - An 80th Birthday Celebration

December 8, 2006

from PRX

produced by Jonny Meister

Episode description from PRX:

“A look at John Coltrane’s career and music on the 80th anniversary of his birth. Coltrane greatly expanded our notion of jazz in his all-too-short career and life, enjoying both commercial success and acclaim, but also criticism and dwindling audiences later in his career. It’’s impossible to cover a significant part of his musical output in one hour, but on this program we touch certain key musical turning points, using both full pieces and parts of pieces, from his first recording, a jam session while he was in the Navy, through his time with Dizzie Gillespie and Miles Davis, and his own leading roles on the Prestige, Atlantic, and Impulse labels. From soft ballads with singer Johnny Hartman to the madness that is “Ascension” we try to scratch the surface hard on one of the most intriguing musical careers of all time.”
